Elections

November 9th, 2020

I find politics quite boring, tedious and hardly worth the passionate enthusiasm people give the topic, considering the limited options they have to choose from.

After the recent US election, I wonder about the relevancy of having such few choices in the world we live in today.

When you only have two choices, is it really an achievement when your side wins or a dissappointment when your side loses? Is it really a win if, for decades, no side has won or lost by much more just a few percentage points?

Thanks to the long tail the internet has created, we as consumers have more choices available to us in almost all aspects of life.

Whether you’re into black coffee, coffee with milk, or iced coffees – you have the choice.

Into Indian food? In a few clicks you can order take out in the style of Northern Indian, South India, Gujurat, New Delhi, and more.

Collecting stamps of wild tropical birds? Crafting your own gluten free beer? Watching Isekai anime? Well, there’s someone out there looking out for people like you.

The long tail of choices allows us to make better choices.

So why then, are we still so limited in the realm of politics? If indeed it is us, the voters, who are served by the democratic system, then surely we should have better options to choose from, as we do in almost every other category imaginable.
